Toxins and venoms

be explored. Darwin claims to have agonized over the evolution of the eye and much is made of the actual ease of its evolution in terms of dioptrics. Less often is it remembered that the hallmarks of any eye, its transparency and transduction mechanisms, depend on proteins (respectively crystallins and opsins) that evolved long before there were any eyes. And this molecular inherency underpins all biological complexity, even brains. Given these molecules, eyes (and nervous systems) are an inevitability. Darwin’s insights began with the behemoths of South America and the finches of Galapagos. Walcott in contrast was no biologist, but he knew at once that the Burgess Shale was wholly remarkable. For him the pressing urgency of description, not to mention his innumerable other commitments, never would allow him to reflect on what deeper implications this fauna might provide. But he lit the fuse, and just as the Darwinian formulation irrevocably destroyed any sort of Paleyean creationism, so I suggest Walcott will be seen as the one who one hundred years ago placed the first charges against the monolith. Darwin was right, but so too was Newton — in his way. Now we have a thrilling prospect of investigating fundamental principles that underpin the Darwinian story.

Animal toxins and their analgesic properties

One of the main problems in many diseases is pain which has soc ial, psychological and physical symptoms on patients. Due to the side effects of analgesic drugs, new effective compounds to reduce pain are needed. Ionic channels, acetylcholine and gamma aminobutyric acid receptors and molecules such as nitric oxide are involved in pain paths. Animal venoms contain small molecules with various p...

Identification and Purification of two Mammalian Nourotoxins from Iranian Scorpion (Buthotus schach) Venom

Scorpion venoms contain of variety of peptides toxic to mammals ، insects and crustaceans. Toxic peptides are the main factors in scorpion venom causing toxicity, (their amount being 1-3%of total venom.). Most of the scorpion toxins have been isolated from the venoms of scorpions in the family Buthidae. The scorpion Buthotus Schach belonging to the Buthidae family is widely found in the weste...

Toxinology of Marine Venomous Snails

A surprisingly large number of sea snail species are venomous. Cone snail venoms are produced in a lengthy tubular duct from a complex venom gland and form a cocktail of many toxins, particularly conotoxins which have high potency and specificity for their target specific receptors. They inhibit various channels, neuromuscular receptors or hormones of the victim, and interfere in the transmitte...

Recent Advances in Research on Widow Spider Venoms and Toxins

Widow spiders have received much attention due to the frequently reported human and animal injures caused by them. Elucidation of the molecular composition and action mechanism of the venoms and toxins has vast implications in the treatment of latrodectism and in the neurobiology and pharmaceutical research. In recent years, the studies of the widow spider venoms and the venom toxins, particula...

Effects of Animal Venoms and Toxins on Hallmarks of Cancer

Animal venoms are a cocktail of proteins and peptides, targeting vital physiological processes. Venoms have evolved to assist in the capture and digestion of prey. Key venom components often include neurotoxins, myotoxins, cardiotoxins, hematoxins and catalytic enzymes. The pharmacological activities of venom components have been investigated as a source of potential therapeutic agents. Interes...
